One of my favourite events from last year was the Vancouver Writers Festival (check out the Facebook Live I did), where I appeared with Lydia Kwa and Sean Cranbury to read from my new book, Has the World Ended Yet? Great festival, fascinating writers and thoughtful audiences!
Just because the festival is over doesn’t mean it has to end, though! Alli Vail is currently reading all the books from the 2017 Vancouver Writers Festival and posting thoughts about them at Reading Writers Fest. Of course, I am partial to the entry on my book.
This is wacky and weird and I kind of loved it. The answer to the question: Has the World Ended Yet (great question, aside from being the title of the book), is yes. We probably just haven’t figured it out. The ending is just out of sight, until it’s not.
I’m delighted to see my new book, Has the World Ended Yet?, included in Corey Redekop’s list of books that he done got through in 2017. Some mighty fine company there – I’ve added some new books to my own reading list!
If you like my work, I think you’ll love Corey’s books. I’d suggest starting with Husk, a darkly comic zombie novel. That one is still messing with my head….
Thanks to everyone who entered the Goodreads giveaway for Has the World Ended Yet?, my new book. Nearly 1,300 people entered – amazing! The 10 winner should be receiving the book shortly and taken into the shining light. The rest of us will be abandoned on the earth to meet our miserable fate. Happy New Year!
My publisher Wolsak & Wynn is holding a Goodreads book giveaway for Has The World Ended Yet?, my new book. You could win one of 10 free copies. Hell, you could win all 10 free copies if you know how to game the system. I’m not sure what you would do with 10 copies – start a very niche bookstore?
Anyway, enter to win and all that. And leave a review if you’ve already read the book and liked it! Authors like things like good reviews because it shows us people aren’t just buying our books to prop up their wobbly Ikea furniture. Although I’m down with that, too. As long as you buy it. Or win it for free.
I’ll go along with any review of my book that says “in the tradition of writers such as Neil Gaiman.” Thanks, Vancouver Sun!
Peter Darbyshire’s short story collection Has the World Ended Yet? was my third cover for the Buckrider imprint. I was given a PDF of the manuscript, and my art direction from publisher Noelle Allen was “Paul had the idea of the cover being influenced by Weird Tales and having that fun, pulp feel.” (Paul being Senior Editor Paul Vermeersch).
With evocative story titles like “The Calling of Cthulhu,” “The Deity Salesmen Always Ring Twice,” and “You Shall Know Us by Our Vengeance,” as well as the eponymous “Has the World Ended Yet?,” I felt confident in putting together an appropriate apocalyptic pulpy cover.
“Manifestations of discarded, mythological histories that have risen up, unbidden and unwanted, to wreak havoc on characters already caught up in more everyday struggles.” – Quill & Quire review of my new book, Has the World Ended Yet?
(Photo is from the Paris Catacombs, when I was much younger and thinner.)
“Darbyshire (The Warhol Gang) delights in mashing pop-culture genres together, exposing profound truths beneath classic tropes in ways at once hilarious, weird, and heart-breaking.”
